The Youth Violence and Development Program is a 9-month education initiative consisting of two training curriculums designed to expose middle school youth ages 11-12 to media technology. To avoid interfering with regular school activities, most workshop training initiatives will occur in the evening throughout the week. We believe this approach is also an appropriate way to keep youth busy on a regular basis.

The Technology Learning Center training is focused on a live studio production of a youth talk show of relevent topics.  Students design and construct a TV set, learn lighting, sound and camera work plus all the production elements that go into live TV. Students experience ‘Green Screen’ techniques and learn all the essential elements of electronic information gathering. Students also broadcast their show on the Web. All equipment is provided and students produce, edit and duplicate their programme onto DVD

Level One Curriculum
Level 1 curriculum provides students the initial training required for successful video and/or television production. The successful completion of this training will prepare students for work in a live production setting in the Mount Airy studio.

Technology Center/Production Studio Etiquette
This orientation session teaches appropriate behavior and use of Technology Learning Center and Production Studio equipment. Students are introduced to TLC’s policies, rules and regulations of the organization. It is critical that participants understand proper etiquette and utilization of the facility to foster a successful and mutually beneficial relationship between the instructor and the student. This class is a prerequisite for taking other classes.

Studio Technician
Students receive hands on training of all studio and control room positions and equipment (audio, switcher, character generator, teleprompter, floor director, studio cameras, directing, lighting and set design).  After rotating through all areas, students must demonstrate proficiency in each area during a scheduled class project and in mock productions during class time. (3 classes, production of 1 studio project)

Basic Final Cut Editing
Learn the basics of non-linear editing by understanding editing theory and learning practical applications.  Students will capture footage working from edit decision lists, apply transitions and music, create text and put projects on tape. Students will practice using pre-shot footage, and will also edit student projects that will air on DCTV.  (2 classes, 1 project edit session)

Level Two Curriculum
The Level 2 curriculum consists of four workshops that are designed for students who have been exposed to the various facets of television production.  This training is also conducted in a live video and/or television production environment where students are expected to perform in a professional manner.

Digital Photography
This hands-on class is an introduction to digital photography for beginner photographers. Students will start discussing what makes a photograph by looking at photographs by other artists; discover possible meanings and explore photographic techniques such as composition, lighting and subject matter. (2 classes, 1 photography project)

Audio Production (Live)
This class will introduce students to the ins and outs of recording in a live audio production.  Using similar equipment found in professional recording studios, participants will learn in this workshop audio recording and production skills, digital mixing, and specific techniques for producing audio, live sound, and cassette/CD/DVD production.  (3 classes, 1 audio project)

Video Production (Live)
This hands-on video workshop is designed for the videomaker with limited skills. This class is an ideal introduction to all phases of production, with excellent instruction and personal attention. This course teaches the skills necessary to accomplish the basic preproduction, production and postproduction processes. In the span of the class students will go through mini-production planning, shooting, and editing a group tape. (3 classes, 1 video project)

Web Design
This four-week workshop will teach participants how the individual products of web development templates and tools can be effectively used together. Students will design, layout, and build web pages by employing real-life projects and scenarios with an emphasis on creative possibilities.  Other training will include the design of backgrounds and colors, insert graphics and text, and learn how to publish the website on the Internet. (3 classes, 1 video project)

Safety and Security Awareness
There are no firm guidelines to providing safety and security training to youth.  The initial program training will take place off-site at the DCTV facility.  Signed permission slips are required from parents/guardians for all off-site training and field trip travel. Program facilitators will serve as chaperones and be responsible for the supervision of youth during all off-site activities.

The key to our security awareness training is assessment and monitoring. As youth-service providers we will take the numerous steps to reduce the stressors on children and to reduce the risks of youth violence. Our plan is to work with schools, the parents of youth and our counseling center psychologists to deal with these situations as they present themselves.
